										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In recent years, the refrigeration sector has been experiencing one of the most complex periods in memory.<br />
The regulatory pressure derived from the EU F-Gas Regulation and the progressive adjustment of the HFC phase-down is directly impacting the operation of existing refrigeration installations. The combination of the CO₂ tax applied to importers/distributors and the reduction in supply is generating a significant increase in refrigerant costs, affecting all types of installations, especially direct expansion systems in medium and industrial facilities where refrigerant charge is considerable.<br />
In this context, many operators are facing:<br />
• Refrigerant replacement costs that exhaust the annual maintenance budget in the first quarter, generating growing tensions between operators and end customers never before seen in the sector.<br />
• Installations with HFCs trapped without viable retrofit alternatives, requiring the continued operation of HFC-based systems until migration to low-GWP refrigerants becomes feasible.<br />
• Evaporators being the component most susceptible to leaks.</p>
<p>This is due to several factors:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Fragility of the evaporator coil:</strong><br />
The tubes that make up the coil have a very thin wall thickness to maximize thermal transfer of the refrigerant. This characteristic makes them more vulnerable to physical and mechanical damage.</li>
<li><strong>Continuous cycles of temperature and pressure:</strong><br />
Constant expansion and contraction cause misalignments between the tubes and the metal support plates. These movements generate contact points and friction that, over time, lead to material wear and leaks.</li>
<li><strong>Corrosion from airflow and chamber environment:</strong><br />
The air circulating through the evaporator may contain corrosive substances from the respiration and decomposition of perishable products, which accelerates the deterioration of heat-exchange coils.</li>
<li><strong>Chemical attack from drain vapors:</strong><br />
Vapors produced by stagnant water decomposition in the drainage system rise toward the evaporator and damage both welds and tubes through corrosive processes.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>What can we do?</strong><br />
To respond to this scenario, at Garcia Cámara we have developed a new generation of multipurpose evaporators, designed with thermal and mechanical compatibility criteria that allow their use in different refrigeration cycle configurations.</p>
<p><strong>What does it mean for an evaporator to be multipurpose?</strong><br />
It means it is designed and ready to operate with the current system, but also prepared for future refrigerants and emerging technologies. To achieve this, we analyze each case to offer:<br />
• Heat exchangers optimized to operate with current HFC refrigerants and alternative fluids such as CO₂ (in subcritical and transcritical applications), pumped or direct-expansion NH₃, as well as solutions with secondary fluids.<br />
• Coil designs and fin-tube geometries adapted to variations in pressure, cooling capacity, and thermal regime according to the refrigerant.<br />
• Components and materials selected to ensure chemical compatibility and resistance to high operating pressures (especially in CO₂).<br />
• Flexible configuration for different evaporation regimes and mass flow rates, facilitating integration into hybrid systems or transition phases.</p>
<p><strong>What are the advantages of having this product?</strong><br />
• Service continuity without prolonged shutdowns or complete system replacement.<br />
• Phased planning of the transition.<br />
• Reduced economic impact, avoiding immediate large-scale investment.<br />
• Maximizing the value of investment through the replacement of standard evaporators with multipurpose ones.<br />
• Increased lifespan of existing installations, aligning them with future regulatory scenarios.</p>
<p><strong>Commitment and Objective:</strong><br />
Our commitment and objective is to offer solutions that maintain thermodynamic efficiency, ensure mechanical compatibility, and anticipate future regulatory requirements.<br />
Because the transition in refrigeration is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be traumatic or economically unfeasible.<br />

<li><strong>Sizing for Maximum Mass Flow</strong><br />
Liquid and suction lines must be sized considering the highest possible mass flow, which occurs under conditions of minimum discharge pressure and maximum suction pressure. This scenario represents the point of greatest hydraulic demand for the piping.</li>
<li><strong>Calculation of Diameters and Number of Lines</strong><br />
It is essential to calculate the number of lines and their respective diameters, ensuring that:</li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li>Fluid velocities remain within the optimal range for oil entrainment and thermal stability.</li>
<li>Pressure drops are controlled and remain within the limits defined in the design, under any operating condition.</li>
</ul>
<ol start="4">
<li><strong>Routing of Vertical Pipes and Traps</strong><br />
Vertical ascending pipes must:</li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li>Have a trap at the beginning (at the base) to ensure correct liquid entrainment and consequently promote oil recovery in the system (this oil must be miscible with the refrigerant).</li>
<li>Discharge at the top of the return header, preventing oil from flowing back down into the ascending pipes.</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Drainage of Traps</strong><br />
Drain points must be provided at the lowest parts of the traps, allowing emptying and, if necessary, purging oil from the system.</li>
<li><strong>Slope in Suction Lines</strong><br />
Suction lines must be installed with a minimum slope of 0.5% in the flow direction toward the suction separator, promoting oil return and refrigerant drainage.</li>
</ol>
<p>The entire system must be designed and installed in compliance with current technical standards, considering safety, maintainability, and energy efficiency as fundamental pillars.</p>

The gradual restriction on fluorinated refrigerants has accelerated the adoption of natural <strong>alternatives such as ammonia (NH₃)</strong>, prompting continuous evolution in industrial refrigeration system design.</p>
<p>Against this backdrop, we are developing, within our industrial range, DX evaporators for NH₃ refrigeration in low-charge systems. This not only decreases system efficiency, but can also lead to increased energy consumption and affect cooling capacity. That is why having effective defrosting solutions—such as the nested circuit system—is essential to maintain optimal performance and efficiency in refrigeration systems.</p>
<p>Several methods can be used to remove this frost, such as:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Air defrost</strong>: This is a simple technique that involves temporarily stopping the flow of refrigerant through the evaporator coils while keeping the fans running. By doing so, the warm air generated by the fans helps melt the frost through frictional heat and heat transfer from the air to the frozen surface. This method is especially useful when the ambient temperature is above 5°C, as under these conditions the warm air can defrost the frost without the need for more complex or costly systems.</li>
<li><strong>Electric resistance defrost</strong>: This is a straightforward and direct method for removing frost from coils. It involves suspending the flow of refrigerant through the tubes and activating electric heaters placed between the tubes and fins. Thanks to the Joule effect, these resistances generate heat that melts the accumulated frost. However, it&#8217;s important to note that this system requires additional electrical consumption, as the heaters need power to generate heat. It is an effective solution, particularly in situations that require fast and controlled defrosting, though it does imply extra energy costs.</li>
<li><strong>Hot gas defrost</strong>: This method works by introducing hot or warm gas—taken from the discharge gases of the refrigeration system—directly into the interior of the evaporator tubes. Since the hot gas has a higher temperature than the frost covering the tubes and fins, it helps melt the frost quickly. However, this method requires that hot gas be available for the process, and it also involves considering the distance between the compressor unit (where the hot gas is generated) and the evaporators. As the gas travels through the system, it loses temperature, which may reduce its effectiveness in defrosting. It is an efficient method, but proper planning is necessary to ensure the gas reaches the coils at a sufficient temperature</li>

<p>At GC, we have developed our range of evaporators and condensers to work with CO2 with PS45, PS60 and PS80, in line with our commitment to environmental responsibility.</p>
<p>The benefits of CO2 as a refrigerant include:</p>
<p>•<strong> Efficient:</strong> It offers high heat transfer coefficients and high thermal conductivity.<br />
• <strong>Clean:</strong> CO2 is a natural, clean and environmentally friendly refrigerant.<br />
• <strong>Safe:</strong> CO₂ is non-corrosive, non-flammable and non-toxic.<br />
• <strong>Economical:</strong> the cost of production is low, making it a safe and inexpensive alternative for refrigeration.<br />
• <strong>The low viscosity of the liquid and gas lines</strong> allows for the use of smaller piping, thereby reducing system costs.<br />
• <strong>Excellent cooling properties:</strong> high volumetric cooling capacity (6 times higher than R404A), resulting in smaller compressors, components and piping. In addition, its constant evaporating temperature character makes it possible to use it with a smaller temperature difference in evaporators and heat exchangers. The result is much lower energy consumption<br />
• <strong>High cascade efficiency:</strong> performs well in cascade systems, offering excellent efficiency and performance values with low temperature systems.</p>
